Session delivery

KGSC Cadet Club is supervised by a professional instructor (as long as we can find one!) who is actively supported by a team of like-minded parents/guardians, who support both on water activity and the hard work of organisation behind the scenes. Our shared interest is helping the cadets to enjoy KGSC and create friendships which form around the activity of sailing.

Cadet Club offers sailing sessions for sailors who can sail independently and are minimum RYA Stage 3 ability.

Cadet Club is unable to facilitate learn to sail activity for beginners.  Courses for this are offered at the reservoir by Keep Sailing. We take over once your child has RYA Stage 3.

There are times when instructors are impossible to find, and on those days we will band together as parents to run the session.

Craft (Dinghy/Windsurfer)

Club craft are available to hire through the club’s membership website.

Hire craft are limited and we encourage members to consider ownership in their second sailing year, although if craft are spare then second year sailors can still hire boats.

How am I required to help as a parent / guardian?

KGSC’s Cadet Club activities depend on the commitment and motivation of parents/guardians.  The Cadet Club being facilitated by parents/guardians means not only do we keep cost low but, importantly, enables the activity to thrive due to likeminded parents coming together to enjoy KGSC and create a club atmosphere that is important to our community.

Parents / guardians wishing to send their child to Cadet Club are required to offer at least 12 days of help per year.

We appreciate that even an average of one day per month can be a big commitment to some. So, to help our members we have pulled together a range of ideas which will hopefully remove any perceived barrier.  Importantly, the support doesn’t just mean helping on site at the club.  Take a look…

On the water

All our lead instructors and coaches are RYA qualified. All power boat drivers hold minimum of RYA Power Boat Level 2.

We will always encourage and support parents / guardians to assist on water because the more qualified helpers we have the more junior sailors we can host!

Are you qualified?

Working with our existing experienced team we would welcome your support.

Can you help with any of the following?

  • RYA instructor (Power, Dinghy, Windsurf)

  • Power boat (RYA Power Boat L2, RYA Safety Boat)

  • Sailing coach (RYA Race Coach L2/L3)

  • First Aid

Experienced but not qualified / completely new to boating?

We have this covered! The small cost of RYA training will not only help make our club self-sustaining, to enable your child to access the junior club, but will also provide you with a nationally recognised qualification and a transferable skill you can take and use at any other UK boating club in the future.

RYA training courses

  • RYA Power Boat Level 2 (designed for complete beginner)

  • RYA Safety Boat (PBL2 required and minimum experience)

  • RYA First Aid (no experience necessary)

Shore side (Any activity on the club premises)

  • Beach master (training provided)

    • Shore side radio. Hold the radio… be our communications on land. A safety feature but also helps us manage the sailors on and off the water.

    • Launch/recover assistance.

    • The younger sailors often need help. Having a few willing parents to simply assist the sailors launch and recover their craft is a great help.

  • Galley

    • The club has a fully fitted kitchen (galley). Helping the galley to function on our junior activity days will mean refreshments and hot/cold snacks for both the volunteers and the sailors.

  • Mower

    • Enjoy the delight of the clubs’ sit on top mower to help keep the long grass and foliage at bay.

    • You’ll need to receive a short intro to the equipment but once trained you can take this job on at your leisure.

Online

  • Cadet Club social media

    • We’re not experts but you might have a strategy to help this area thrive.

  • Cadet Club website presence

    • We’re not experts but you might have a strategy to help this area thrive.

  • Cadet Club booking system

    • Our booking system is simple (apparently). For events and activities, we require a team to take some ownership of this to help keep the processes smooth and convenient for everyone.

Administration

  • Newsletter.

A few words each month that we can post on the club social media and share to the wider membership

  • Welcoming new members. We want to make the Cadet Club as welcoming as we can. This might mean ‘buddying-up’ with a new family to help them initially, or the odd phone call/email just to check-in with either prospective or new members. We just need nice happy people to make our new families feel welcome.

  • Reports / write ups for yachting press/club newsletter

    • If we have anything to tell the world we need a team to pull some words together so we can share these successes.

  • Fund raising for equipment

Do you have your own suggestion? Let us know.

  • Can you help in any other way either onsite or remotely? We’re always open to ideas that will help sustain and make our Cadet Club even more awesome.
